Operating in hostile theatres, military vehicles are subject to lateral dynamic forces. Commonly these occur during a side mounted IED attack when there is a large lateral component to the vehicle dynamics. Similarly, vehicles may land on their side upon the slam down event. These conditions are tested by lateral sled tests. Most competitive seats are not compliant to these measures, further decoupling the the occupant from the seat, impairing occupant survivability and lowering injury tolerance thresholds.
